Artapanus (Fragments)

Current State of the OCP Text

The surviving Greek fragments of Artapanus are presented here as cited in Eusebius and Clement of Alexandria. The contexts for the fragments are as follows:

Fragment 1 (on Abraham) Eusebius, Praep. Evang. 9.18.1
Fragment 2 (on Joseph) Eusebius, Praep. Evang. 9.23.1-4
Fragment 3 (on Moses) Eusebius, Praep. Evang. 9.27.1-37
Fragment 3b (on Moses) Clement of Alexandria, Stromata 1.23.154.2-3 (par. Praep. Evang. 9.27.23-25)

The text of these fragments is based on the standard critical editions of Eusebius and Clement (see below).

Sources for the Texts of Eusebius and Clement

The recent editions of Artapanus (Holladay, Bombelli, and Denis) are all based on the same critical editions of Eusebius and Clement which underlie the OCP text. These are:

Eusebius, Praep. Evang. Karl Mras, Die Praeparatio Evangelica (2 parts; vol. 8 of Eusebius Werke; 2d ed.; ed. Édouard des Places; GCS 43; Berlin: Akademie-Verlag, 1982-83), 1.504 (frag. 1), 1.516-17 (frag. 2), 1.519-24 (frag. 3).
See also Migne, PG, 21.
Clement of Alexandria, Stromata O. Stählin, L. Früchtel, and U. Treu, Clemens Alexandrinus (vol. 2; 4th ed.; GCS 52[15]; Berlin: Akademie Verlag, 1985), 96 (frag. 3b).
See also Migne, PG, 8-9.

Corrections

Corrections to Holladay's Edition

One typographical error is apparent in Holladay's (otherwise excellent) text. In Fragment 3 (Praep. Evang. 9.27.21), a καί has been accidentally duplicated.

Corrections to Bombelli's Edition

Bombelli's text, also very accurate, contains one typographical error. In Fragment 3 (Praep. Evang. 9.27.32), near the end of the line, we find in Mras' text the clause διὰ τὸ τὴν γῆν εἶναι. Bombelli, who otherwise holds to Mras' text, omits the article τήν.

The text of the fragments of Artapanus published here is identical to that in Holladay's edition and is used by permission of the Society of Biblical Literature. In fact, however, the extract from O. Stählin's text of the Stromata published here is in the public domain (the 4th ed. rev. by L. Früchtel, and U. Treu being identical in this passage to Stählin's 1st ed.). Only Mras' text of Eus. Praep. Evang. is covered by copyright, and in this case the re-publication (as here) of a short excerpt may qualify as "fair use." Before using this or any other OCP text for another purpose, please click on the "copyright and permissions" link below to read the policy on re-use and re-publication.
